Modern ATS systems are trained on millions of chronological resumes. They know to look for an Experience section, read company → title → dates → bullets, and extract skills from context. When you use a functional format, the parser often can't build a coherent timeline and your resume drops in ranking — even if your content is excellent.

Resume format for freshers in 2026

Freshers don't need a functional resume — they need a strategically ordered chronological one. The recommended structure:

1. Professional Summary (3 lines about who you are and what you bring)
2. Education (institute, degree, CGPA, graduation year)
3. Skills (technical + tools, organized by category)
4. Projects (with links, tech stack, and measurable outcomes)
5. Internship / Experience (if any)
6. Certifications and Achievements

Resume format for experienced professionals

With 5+ years of experience, you can use a clean reverse-chronological resume starting with a compelling Professional Summary, then Experience, Skills, and Education. Avoid listing every job you've ever had — focus on the last 10 years and the most relevant roles.

Two pages are acceptable for senior profiles. One tight, impact-focused page is better than two pages of padding. See the experienced resume example.

Key formatting rules that apply to all formats

• Use standard fonts: Arial, Calibri, Roboto, or Georgia at 10–12pt
• Section headings must be clear: Experience, Education, Skills — not Creative Labels
• Margins: 0.5–1 inch on all sides for readability
• No tables, columns (for ATS parsers), text boxes, or graphics in body text
• Save as PDF (unless ATS specifically asks for DOCX)
• File name: FirstName-LastName-Resume.pdf

One page vs two pages — the real answer

Stop agonizing over this. Use one page if you have under 5 years experience. Use two pages if you have 7+ years and genuinely need the space. Three pages is almost never appropriate unless you're an academic or publishing researcher.

The real question is: does every line earn its place? If you're cutting font size to 9pt or reducing margins to squeeze onto one page, two pages is fine. If page 2 is just padded with irrelevant internships from 2015, cut it.
